Texts

In this section, you will find excerpts of some interviews with Pont Vergés at different points of his career. The coherence of his statements over the years is remarkable; despite his radical changes in style (it is difficult to classify him into a movement or a trend in painting), a constant and continuous search marked his life from the beginning to the end.

Excerpts of Interviews with Pedro Pont Vergés

EL MUNDO, Illustrated Morning Newspaper - Culture Supplement
Wednesday, September 7th, 1960

Pedro Pont Vergés, Painter

By Aldo Amuchástegui

(...)

Pedro Pont Vergés in 1960- Why do you paint, Mr. Pont Vergés?
- And you, why do you write? I don't know, it's very difficult to answer such a question just like that. I started drawing as a child, and kept on doing it on my own until I began to study engraving with Alberto Nicasio. One day, some seventeen years ago I think, I found myself painting. Later on, I had Ernesto Farina and Roberto Viola as teachers and I couldn't stop painting anymore. Today, painting is for me as important as breathing; by its means I consolidate ideas, I catch them and try to express them. Am I able to communicate through it with my fellow beings, or am I not? It doesn't matter. There are my pictures, and they are part of myself.
- When you finish a picture, does it matter to you if other people like it? Or is it enough if it only satisfies you?
- I think a true painter should perforce care about his attitude towards the picture: I paint neither for the public, nor for my friends or my foes. I paint because I have to. I'm the one responsible and I might or might not be satisfied, but I feel that ultimately that which is done doesn't belong to me anymore, it turns into a living being with its own responsibility.

(...)

- What is your artistic goal?
- To try to live eighty years in order to search out a real solution to the problems of my painting.
- Are you satisfied with yourself?
- No, indeed. If I were, it wouldn't make any sense wishing to live eighty years.
